Certified Nurse Aide

Nurse Aides provide direct personal care to patients in various healthcare settings. Courses will be held in the LISD classroom with clinical instruction at a long-term care facility. Those successfully completing the program will be eligible for State Certification testing. This is an 80-hour course; dates vary. Call for a complete schedule and refund policy.

Students must submit to fingerprinting, provide current two-part Tuberculin skin test results, and COVID-19 vaccination card.

Clinical Medical Assistant Program - With Clinical Externship

This program is intended for students who want to prepare for an exciting, challenging, and rewarding career in healthcare. This program will train students to assist physicians by performing functions related to the clinical responsibilities of a medical office. Instruction includes, among other things, preparing patients for examination and treatment, routine laboratory procedures, diagnostic testing, technical aspects of phlebotomy, and the cardiac life cycle. Students will review important topics including phlebotomy, pharmacology, the proper use and administration of medications, taking and documenting vital signs, cardiology including proper lead placements, a professional workplace behavior, ethics and the legal aspects of healthcare. This program includes 140 hours of classroom lecture, hands-on labs, and a clinical externship opportunity at a local healthcare provider.

NWCA National Certification: This program meets the necessary requirements to take the National Workforce Career Association (NWCA) Clinical Medical Assistant (CMAC) Exam.

NHA National Certification: This program meets the necessary requirements to take the National Healthcareer Association (NHA) Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) national examination.

Clinical Externship: This program includes a 160 hour clinical externship opportunity. To be eligible for the clinical, students must successfully complete the 140 hour program, submit to a thorough background check, drug screening, and meet other requirements.

Medical Administrative Assistant Program - With Clinical Externship

This 50-hour course prepares students to function effectively in many of the administrative and clerical positions in the health care industry. Medical Administrative Assistants, Medical Secretaries, and Medical Records Clerks are all positions in great demand. This program covers important background information on the medical assisting profession and interpersonal skills, medical ethics and law, medical terminology, basics of insurance billing and coding, telephone techniques, scheduling appointments, medical records management, and management of practice finances. This program is intended to provide students with a well-rounded introduction to medical administration so that a student can gain the necessary skills required to obtain a medical administrative assistant position in the health care field.

NWCA National Certification: This program meets the necessary requirements to take the National Workforce Career Association (NWCA) Clinical Medical Assistant (MAAC) Exam.

National Certification: This program meets the necessary requirements to take the National Healthcareer Association’s (NHA) - Certified Medical Administrative Assistant (CMAA) exam.

American Sign Language 1

ASL is the third most widely used language in the U.S., using the combination of hand signs, gestures, and facial expressions. Finger-spelling, numbers, basic grammar, vocabulary, and cultural information related to the deaf community will be covered. Children 12 or older are welcome and must enroll with an adult. Textbook is included in registration fee.

Crochet for Beginners

This course will look at types of yarn and hooks and how to know what you need, the different ways of starting a crochet piece, the terminology used in crochet, and how to follow a crochet pattern in order to make something.

Multiple Stitch Crochet

Enrich your skills by going beyond the basic stitches to prepare for more elaborate designs. In this one-night course, you will be given hands-on instruction and practice a variety of stitches to expand your crochet abilities. Bring one skein of yarn and your appropriately sized crochet hook to make a scarf.

Beginning Knitting

Learn the basics of knitting and discover a relaxing hobby you’ll enjoy for a lifetime! Learn to cast on, knit, purl, and bind off, as well as basic stitches like stockinette, ribbing, and more. Beginning Floral Design

Whether you want to pursue a career or embellish your home, this course will provide you with a starting point and a great deal of enjoyment. You will learn floral skills with hands-on instruction using floral tools, containers, and a variety of fresh flowers. Advanced Floral Design

Prerequisite: Two semesters of Beginning Floral Design.

This course provides an opportunity to continue developing your floral design skills using many varieties of plant materials. You will create challenging, intricate, and elaborate designs in this course. This course is held at the LISD Center for a Sustainable Future (CSF), located at 4260 Tipton Highway, Adrian, MI.

Beginning Cake Decorating

Discover how easy cake decorating can be. Learn how to pipe borders, basket weaves, and make pretty flowers from frosting. After the initial class, students will be required to bring a cake (minimum 6 inch round) or cupcakes (24), and one or two batches of frosting to each class. Also, one small package of fondant.

Treat Decorating for the Family - New Course!

Want to learn to decorate fun treats with your children or grandchildren? Up to two children ages 8 and older with an adult can discover how easy treat decorating can be. Learn how to pipe borders, make pretty flowers, and fun designs with frosting. After the initial class, families will be required to bring 18-24 cupcakes, 18-24 cookies, and one to two batches of frosting to each class. Also, one small package of fondant. The cost of registration covers 1 adult and up to 2 kids, please register under the parent’s name and only 1 registration per family.

Creating a Surface Design Collection - New Course!

Learn to design repeat patterns for printing your own fabric, wrapping paper, wallpaper, etc.

Interested in learning how to create a seamless repeat of your own doodles, sketches, or artwork and print it on your own fabric, wrapping paper, or wallpaper? Jen will teach you how to take an idea and expand it to create a collection, the best ways to create art for printing on different substrates, scanning and vectorizing your artwork, creating seamless repeats, how to export your files, and some of her favorite places to get your designs printed. Participants should bring a sketchbook, pencils, a working knowledge of how to operate a Mac Computer, and your imagination to class!

Making an Heirloom Teddy Bear - New Course!

In this course you will make a teddy bear that is fit to be handed down for generations to come. Learn how to needle felt facial features, insert joints, and how not to struggle when sewing fur fabrics. Students will need a sewing machine (not needed for first class). Intro to Cloth Doll Making - New Course!

In this course you will make a simple cloth (choose mouse, dog, or bunny) doll from cotton/linen fabrics. Learn to embroider facial features, stuff body parts smoothly, and receive tips and tricks for getting smooth finishes. You will also learn how to make a French seam. Students will need a sewing machine, thread to match body fabric color, embroidery floss, scissors, and an embroidery needle. Fabric choices will be covered in the first class. Students should come to the first class with a half yard of pattern tracing paper or sew-in interfacing and a pencil/pen. Sewing machine isn't needed for the first class.

Intro to Waldorf Style Doll Making - New Course!

In this course you will make a 5” Waldorf Style doll. Learn how to make a Waldorf style head, wire a posable body, embroider hair and eyes, and design your doll’s outfit. A perfect gift for a young child or doll lover! A sewing machine will be needed at your home for one step and the rest is hand sewing. Students will need access to a sewing machine at home, thread to match body fabric color (fabric provided at first class), embroidery floss, scissors, and an embroidery needle.

One-Page Business Plan Workshops - New!

Learn how to create a one-page business plan to guide the direction and growth of your company. Sometimes a comprehensive business plan isn't always immediately actionable or practical. In this hands-on workshop, you will walk away with a business plan you can begin to execute immediately. Adult Learning Services @ LISD TECH Center, in partnership with local employers, works to offer hands-on training in manufacturing trades. Pathways offered include Skilled Trade Apprenticeships, certificates, and customized training.

Offered at the LISD TECH Center, these programs are under the direction of the Academy for Manufacturing Careers (AMC), a nationally-recognized training institute, and provide high-quality technical instruction for in-demand manufacturing occupations. Lenawee Lifelong Learning

Lifelong learning is the “ongoing, voluntary, and self-motivated” pursuit of knowledge for either personal or professional reasons. Therefore, it not only enhances social inclusion, active citizenship, and personal development, but also self-sustainability, competitiveness and employability.

Lenawee Lifelong Learning is a program for adults in Lenawee County. They offer learning opportunities on a variety of topics and are supported by several local organizations, including the LISD. Instructors will be either active or retired individuals who are donating their time. No tests, no grades, just fun and learning. Most courses are being scheduled during daytime hours.
