Early Childhood Special Education

Is your child under the age of three? Are you or your child’s physician concerned that your child’s growth and development are not at age level? The LISD Young Children Services staff can assist you in determining if your child needs special education services.

Special Education Referral and Evaluation

Parents, physicians or other community agencies can contact LISD Young Children Services for an initial special education evaluation. LISD Young Children Services staff will meet with the child and the family at their home, daycare or at the LISD Milton C. Porter Education Center.  The staff will interview the parent, review any medical information available and work with the child. Depending on the parents concerns, the LISD Young Children Services staff who evaluate their child may include a school psychologist, speech pathologist, occupational therapist, physical therapist and/or school social worker.

The evaluators will schedule a follow-up appointment with the family to talk about the results of the evaluation and possible recommendations for services.

Planning Process for Special Education Services

The planning process for children and their families under the age of three is an Individual Family Service Plan (IFSP). This planning process gives consideration for the needs of the whole family.
