Law Enforcement & Corrections

This new program offering for the 2023-2024 school year will introduce students to the field of law enforcement and corrections. The program will focus on understanding the public safety branches, law and the legal system, problem solving and investigations, and communications and ethics in law enforcement. This program is being created in response to student demand and workforce data that highlights a need for more law enforcement officials in our county.

Program Description

In this program, students will be exposed to the career field of criminal justice. There are many facets to the field and we will use guest speakers to bring those various roles into the classroom. Guest speakers include, but are not limited to:

• Local police officers and detectives
• Local sheriff deputies
• Local Michigan State Police troopers
• Deputy US Marshal
• Victim's right advocate
• Forensic accountant
• Department of Homeland Security Agent  
• Sexual assault nurse
• Michigan Department of Corrections
• Michigan DNR officers
• Crime Analysts
• Prosecutors
• Juvenile probation officer
• Toxicologist

We will use a curriculum that is largely online with plenty of videos and the ability to work at your own pace. Topics will include:

• Defensive tactics
• Officer safety
• Traffic enforcement 
• Impaired driving
• Drugs of abuse
• Arrest
• Written communication

• Evidence collection and processing
• Custody and interrogations

To Be Successful

If you have a desire to serve and are willing to put others ahead of yourself, this may be the program for you.  There are group academic exercises that will develop your ability to work as a team, group physical training twice a week, leadership opportunities throughout the year, as well as the opportunity to compete against other schools using the skills you learn. The classroom environment is built on trust, accountability, and responsibility.
