Books for Your Child!

Dolly Parton's Imagination Library will help you read with your child. It sounds almost too simple ot be true, but by reading regularly with your children during their preschool years, you are giving them the biggest boost toward a successful education they will ever get. If you are not sure you can afford books for your child, the Imagination Library and Lenawee Community Foundation will make it happen, every month, through age 5 years! Sign up and each month a new, carefully selcect book will be mailed in your child's name directly to your home. Fill out the form in this brochure and get started on your reading adventure!

Book Baskets

Lenawee Great Start created a free Book Basket program.  Book Baskets are found at 12 locations in the Adrian area, and provide an opportunity for a young child to select and keep a book from the basket, completely free.  The goal of these baskets is to ensure that all children in Lenawee County are exposed to books, as research shows that the more a child can interact with a book and be read to, the more prepared they are for school.  We have a wonderful partnership with Goodwill in which they allow us to come once a month and sort through their children’s books. Many of these books are hardly used. Along with the Goodwill LINC program we clean the books, label them, put them in baskets and refill our 12 locations.

Currently, these baskets can be found at the following locations:

  • Community Action Agency
  • Associated Charities
  • Department of Human Services
  • Health Department
  • Community Mental Health
  • Bixby Hospital Registration Waiting Room
  • FabriCare Express Laundry
  • Porter Education Center
  • Adrian Urgent Care
  • Adrian RAC Literacy Center
  • Adrian Super Laundromat
  • Family Medical Center

Great Start is always taking donations of gently used children’s books that range from board books, picture books, to easy-to-read beginner chapter books.  Anyone interested in donating can contact Lenawee Great Start at 517-265-1656 for more information.
