Why do a Diaper Drive?

By: Sarah Meikle/

2016 diaper driveLast year’s diaper drive our community came together and donated over 13,000 diapers as well as over $900 in monetary donations. The monetary donations allowed us to purchase more diapers throughout the year. This year we have set a goal of 15,000 diapers and we are looking for the help from our community once again!

You may be wondering why we hold a diaper drive. Every year over 500 babies in Lenawee County are born into families living below the poverty level. Support agency like WIC and food stamps do not help cover the cost of diapers. Life can be full of surprises and hardships, sometimes those effected most are the little ones. When diaper cost can reach up to $75 a month, often parents have to decide whether to feed their family or buy diapers. A family never should have to decide that.

Diaper Drive Fact Sheet 2017Why not use cloth diapers? I asked this question myself. I quickly found out just how expensive cloth diapers can be, too. But, most importantly, many childcare facilities require disposable diapers due to sanitary reasons. To add to the problem most laundromats prohibit washing cloth diapers in their machines. So what is a parent to do? Steal, prolong the length of time their baby sits in a dirty diaper, decide whether to feed their family or buy diapers? The issue and need is much larger than I could have ever imagined. Studies have shown that babies who are left in a dirty diaper for too long, can suffer from diaper rash, staph infections, urinary tract infections and in some severe cases kidney damage. This also can lead to prolonged crying and poor sleep. Besides the physical aspect this issue can hinder a child’s development as well.

The notion of something so simple like diapers and the lack thereof could have such a negative impact is devastating. So after knowing these facts you may be asking, how can I help?

You can help by donating to The Lenawee Great Start Diaper Drive or simply help spread the word about the need and the importance of making sure our most precious residents have the basic needs to help them through the most crucial early years of their development.
